iMEDCAP: Autonomous Rescue Systems for Military and Civilian Crisis Scenarios

Our Contribution to the European iMEDCAP Project

The rapid deployment of troops, complex operational scenarios and new threat situations present modern rescue systems with enormous challenges. At the same time, natural disasters, industrial accidents or CBRN threats (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards) also require fast, safe and flexible solutions in the civilian sector.

This is exactly where the iMEDCAP project comes in: Its goal is to develop an integrated system for the detection, rescue, transportation and remote support of injured or contaminated persons – using unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and aerial vehicles (UAVs).

A holistic approach

At the heart of the project lies the MedEvac Decision, Coordination & Support System (MedEvac DCS) . It combines wearable sensors, smart textiles and UAV-supported multi-sensor reconnaissance to enable automated real-time situational awareness.

This is complemented by an interoperable patient transport system that ensures continuous monitoring and life-saving interventions during unmanned transportation. In this way, not only military operations but also civilian disaster scenarios can be supported efficiently.

Our contribution

As a project partner, we bring our expertise in filter and membrane technology as well as in the development of smart textiles for vital data monitoring . In doing so, we make a decisive contribution to the safety and effectiveness of the innovative patient capsules and rescue systems. Our technologies enable reliable monitoring of vital parameters and provide the basis for stable and safe treatment – even under extreme conditions.

Looking ahead

With iMEDCAP, a rescue concept is emerging that combines autonomy, real-time monitoring and intelligent decision support. It demonstrates how military research can also deliver direct benefits for civilian protection – for example, in the event of natural disasters or chemical accidents.

UriSens: The Future of Health Monitoring Starts in Textiles – Grabher Group Joins as Project Partner

Grabher Group is proud to be part of the forward-looking research FFG Project UriSens . Together with leading partners from industry and science, we are working on an intelligent textile sensor system that could become a true innovation in personalized health monitoring.

��The Goal of UriSens: Detect Inflammation Markers in Everyday Life

Acute and chronic diseases require early detection to enable optimal treatment. A key biomarker in medical diagnostics is C-reactive protein (CRP) – an indicator of inflammation that is currently detected through blood tests, which is invasive, uncomfortable , and not suitable for continuous CRP monitoring , especially for vulnerable groups such as infants or elderly individuals in care settings.

UriSens aims to change this:

By developing a non-invasive, textile-integrated sensor system capable of detecting CRP directly in urine – for example, in diapers, incontinence pads, or bed sheets.

�� Grabher Group’s Role in UriSens

As a leader in smart textiles , we bring our expertise in textile integration, conductive materials, and functional manufacturing to the UriSens project. Our shared goal is to develop a comfortable, everyday-ready, and functional textile sensor that integrates technology seamlessly into users' lives.

�� What UriSens Is Exploring

UriSens is going to explore fundamental design of a smart textile system starting from the sensing materials, textile sensor, electronics and software development that may detect CRP levels in urine using electrochemical methods. The project investigates:

The synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as artificial antibodies
Their incorporation onto smart-textile
The detection and signal processing of CRP in urine
And the integration into wearable textile formats , such as underwear, diapers, or incontinence pads

The envisioned sensor system would generate an electrical signal proportional to CRP concentration via electrochemical analysis. The data could then be stored in cloud internally and transmitted wirelessly to a smartphone or external device, where it is analyzed and forwarded to a database or hospital information system (HIS).

The project is funded by the Austrian Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure through the FFG . Project partners include:

EU-certified and in the testing phase: The EKG chest strap by 24sens GmbH

A recent article in VN and NEUE Vorarlberger Tageszeitung featured our subsidiary 24sens GmbH – a valuable recognition of our team's dedication.

The long-term EKG chest strap developed by 24sens GmbH, based on textile sensor technology , has received EU-wide certification under the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) – a significant milestone in our commitment to medical technology. The certification covers not only the physical device, but also the associated software.

The product is intended for use primarily in telemedical diagnostics by medical specialists , but it is also suitable for health-conscious individuals , for example in cases of suspected atrial fibrillation , a common cause of stroke.

We are currently in the testing phase : In close collaboration with medical professionals in Vorarlberg , the system is being trialed in real-world settings.

Upon completion of this phase, we hope to conclude partnership agreements with physicians , enabling the medical device to be used more broadly in patient care. A cooperation with UNIQA Vorarlberg is already in place.

Innovative Research: Technologies for a Sustainable Future

A look behind the scenes: Current research projects and their potential for the future.

After offering you fascinating insights behind the scenes and into our lived sustainability philosophy, we would now like to introduce two of our research projects. With these developments, we are leveraging innovative technologies to

address ecological challenges and enable long-term change.

An exciting example of the current progress in our research is the CO2 hoover - the C-HOOVER system. This globally unique technology uses a special filter technology to efficiently extract carbon dioxide from the ambient air. The C-HOOVER system is currently being successfully operated on a long-term test stand in Lustenau. This project could make an important contribution to combating climate change by helping to filter CO2 from the atmosphere and thus improve air quality.

Another forward-looking project is the development of an environmentally friendly saltwater battery that consists of textile components, among other things. This technology is characterised by a high level of safety, as the battery is neither flammable nor corrosive. A first prototype is already in the test phase and could represent significant progress for a sustainable energy supply.

Behind this innovative project is Nikola Todorovic from Storex Power GmbH , who is working intensively with his team on the research and further development of this technology. Saltwater batteries offer a promising and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional rechargeable batteries, as they contain fewer pollutants and are potentially more cost-effective. It remains exciting to see how this project will develop and what new possibilities it will open up for smart textiles and other applications.

Our current research projects show how innovative and versatile the solutions we are working on at the Grabher Group GmbH are. The C-HOOVER system and the salt water battery are examples of how our research is paving the way for the future of the textile industry.

Millennium Innovation Days und Eröffnung des RENEWABLES FUTURE LAB

Innovation und Vernetzung im Herzen der Textilbranche

Die Millennium Innovation Days 2024 und die Eröffnung des RENEWABLES FUTURE LAB der Universität Wien in Lustenau waren zwei Veranstaltungen, die die Innovationskraft und Zukunftsvision der Textilbranche in den Mittelpunkt stellten.

Vom 16. bis 17. Oktober wurde der Millennium Park zum Hotspot für die textile Zukunft: Gemeinsam mit der Smart Textiles Platform Austria organisierte die Grabher Group GmbH die Millennium Innovation Days und boten ein vielfältiges Programm rund um die Themen Nachhaltigkeit, smarte Textilien und neue Geschäftsmodelle. Expertenvorträge, Diskussionsrunden und Networking-Gelegenheiten machten die Veranstaltung zu einem Pflichttermin für alle, die daran teilhaben möchten, die Textilbranche zukunftsfähig weiter zu entwickeln.

Wir möchten uns herzlich bei allen Teilnehmer*innen, Speaker*innen und Organisator*innen bedanken, die dieses Event zu einem großen Erfolg gemacht haben.

Ein weiteres Highlight der Woche war die feierliche Eröffnung der neuen Forschungsstelle der Universität Wien in unserem Gebäude. Dank des Engagements von Günter Grabher konnte das RENEWABLES FUTURE LAB in Lustenau integriert werden. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für Materialchemie und Materialforschung sowie der V-trion research GmbH entsteht hier das erste Forschungszentrum für anwendungsorientierte Forschung auf dem Gebiet der nachhaltigen und kreislauffähigen Materialien.

Unter der Leitung von Dr. Fiel und Prof. Bismarck sowie Bürgermeister Kurt Fischer und Günter Grabher wurde die Tafeleinweihung feierlich begangen, gefolgt von einer exklusiven Führung durch die Forschungseinrichtungen.

Für die Unternehmen der Region und interessierte Studierende bietet diese Außenstelle vielfältige neue Chancen – von berufsbegleitenden Doktoratsstudien bis hin zur Möglichkeit, in innovative und EU-Taxonomie-konforme Forschung zu investieren.

Die Millennium Innovation Days und die Eröffnung des RENEWABLES FUTURE LAB haben gezeigt, wie wichtig es ist, dass Wissenschaft und Industrie Hand in Hand arbeiten, um eine nachhaltige und erfolgreiche Zukunft zu sichern. The past week was characterised by events and exhibitions.

Robotics for people in old age, in rehabilitation and in everyday hospital life

On 01.07.2024, the inspiring event "Robotics for people in old age, in rehabilitation and in everyday hospital life" took place at the event centre in Münster.

Organised by the AAL AUSTRIA and GMARobotics platforms, the REHA Zentrum Münster and the Melittaklinik, the event provided an excellent opportunity for developers, researchers, users and integrators from Austria and Italy to exchange ideas and network.

Grabher Group GmbH presented innovative approaches and technological advances in the field of smart textiles. These are sensors that are used in the chest belts from 24sens GmbH and are used for the early detection of atrial fibrillation.

The all-day event featured a series of presentations and discussion panels covering all aspects of robotics and smart technologies in healthcare.

Bodenseegespräche 2024

On 4 July 2024, the Smart Textiles Platform took part in the 4th edition of the "Bodenseegespräche" as a network partner and exhibitor.

The "Bodenseegespräche" are an event organised by the "Gesellschaft für Mess-, Automatisierungs- und Robotertechnik" (GMAR) in cooperation with partners from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The aim is to network the robotics and automation scene in the D-A-CH countries as well as in eastern and western Austria.

Through the exchange of knowledge and experience, cross-industry and cross-border co-operation is to be initiated in order to promote the further development of the industry.

Grabher Group GmbH donates a CBRN-protection tent to the "Okhmatdyt" children's hospital in Ukraine.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for National Health, Mykhailo Radutsky, together with Maksym Radutsky, handed over a CBRN protection tent to the "Okhmatdyt" children's hospital in Ukraine. This important protective equipment "PROTENT" by Grabher Group, was donated by Grabher Group GmbH.

The CBRN protection tent provides comprehensive protection against nuclear, biological and chemical threats and ensures that the young patients and medical staff are protected in the event of an attack. Many thanks to Mykhailo and Maksym Radutsky for their important support and for handing over the NBC protection tent to the "Okhmatdyt" children's hospital.

In view of the growing danger of nuclear threats and the increasing dissatisfaction with existing protective measures, we, the Grabher Group GmbH from Vorarlberg, had a clear goal in mind: the development of an extremely effective shelter that is equally suitable for civilians and emergency services.

The NBC protection tent is made of robust materials and fulfils the NATO standard AEP 38 with its special filter inserts.

The special features of this tent are impressive: its flexibility enables a wide range of deployment scenarios.

The CBRN-protection tent "PROTENT" can be set up by one person even without electricity and is therefore equipped for the event of a power failure.

The construction is extremely robust and can withstand wind speeds of up to 60 km/h, meaning it can also be used outdoors. This makes it suitable as an emergency shelter, command centre, information stand, storage tent and more.

Thanks to the filters that can be used, those seeking protection can be shielded from various hazards, be it viruses, toxic chemicals or radioactive particles. The air supply is always guaranteed without the need for pumps or fans.

Entdecken und Staunen - das war die "Lange Nacht der Forschung 2024"

Die Lange Nacht der Forschung erwies sich erneut als ein voller Erfolg. Bei unserer Forschungsstation, der Smart-Textiles Plattform Austria (V-Trion Textile Research) und der Grabher Group GmbH, konnten die Besucher hautnah erleben, was die Zukunft der Textilindustrie bereithält.

Schon beim Betreten der Ausstellungshalle wurden die Gäste von einer Vielzahl interaktiver Stationen empfangen, die einen faszinierenden Einblick in die vielfältigen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten intelligenter Textilien boten. Diese reichen von Kleidung, die Körperfunktionen überwacht, bis hin zu Stoffen, die auf Umweltveränderungen reagieren können.

Besonders beeindruckend waren die Live-Demonstrationen, bei denen Experten die Funktionsweise und Vorteile der neuesten Entwicklungen im Bereich Smart Textiles erklärten. Die Besucher hatten die Gelegenheit, Fragen zu stellen und die innovativen Materialien selbst auszuprobieren. Kinder und Erwachsene gleichermaßen waren begeistert von den Mitmachstationen, an denen sie die Technologie hautnah erleben konnten.

Am 24. Mai 2024 öffnen sich die Tore zu einer faszinierenden Welt des Wissens, zur "Langen Nacht der Forschung" in Österreich. Von 17 Uhr bis 23 Uhr bieten 10 Standorte in Dornbirn und Lustenau einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Forschung in Vorarlberg.

We, at the Grabher Group GmbH, are always on the lookout for environmentally friendly and forward-looking solutions for the textile industry. Today, we would like to present an innovation that our partnership with the renowned company Werner & Mertz has produced.

Focus on PFAS-free initial impregnation:

Together we have developed a PFAS-free initial impregnation for functional clothing based on an innovative process. The technology uses low-pressure plasma and the material-healthy bionicdry® -technology from Werner & Mertz to ensure durable, environmentally friendly impregnation.

Environmentally conscious collaboration: Cradle to Cradle certification and process patent

Werner & Mertz had the composition of the bionicdry® -technology labelled with the Material Health Platinum certificate in accordance with Cradle to Cradle (version 3.1), while we in collaboration with them, utilise a process patent for the initial finishing of bionicdry® -technology. A special plasma activation process anchors the impregnation firmly in the textile surface, which enables long-lasting water repellency even after numerous wash cycles.

Why is this development so important? PFAS chemicals, which are often found in conventional impregnations, can pollute water and be harmful to health. It is therefore crucial to look for environmentally friendly alternatives that do not harm our nature.

bionicdry® - Inspired by nature

The bionicdry® -waterproofing-technology, inspired by nature, uses an active ingredient complex of biological chitosan and special fluorocarbon-free waterproofing agents. This formula reliably strengthens the water-repellent and functional properties of functional clothing and outdoor equipment without impairing breathability.

A milestone for ecological textile impregnation

Our joint research work with Werner & Mertz has reached a milestone in ecological textile impregnation. This innovation not only helps to improve the carbon footprint of textiles, but also sets a new standard for sustainable textile production.

Environmental influences can cause pressure differences to build up in closed enclosures, which can lead to leaks and subsequent damage. In order to equalise these pressures, diaphragms are used which ensure equalisation with the environment and at the same time repel foreign substances. In many places, porous PTFE membranes are used for this purpose. The industry is already looking for alternative solutions due to the pending EU PFAS ban.

The pressure equalisation membrane, MELTECH, developed by Grabher Group completely dispenses with the use of PFAS. The 100% polypropylene membrane impresses with its waterproofness, high air permeability and low-energy weldability.

One example of this is our oil-binding nonwoven MELPLA sorb, which we have produced in anthracite and various widths according to customer requirements.

MELPLA sorb is a highly effective, single-layer oil absorbent nonwoven that can absorb many times its own weight and effectively separates water from oil. The climate-neutral production takes place at our Millenniumpark site in Lustenau, which helps our customers to minimise their CO ₂ footprint.

Advantages in RTM and PREPREG process

On our meltblown line, we have succeeded in producing a nonwoven that significantly reduces the amount of post-processing required in the production of CFRP components. The nonwoven increases the resin content on the surface, exactly where it is needed.

The result is a homogeneous resin layer without a disruptive third phase in the composite material. The use of MELPLA SE in the prepreg or RTM process minimises pores and air pockets on the surface, reduces pinholes and increases the impact strength of the fabric.

We have succeeded in developing a protective tent that sets new standards. It can be set up by just one person without electricity and is suitable for use in the civilian sector, by rescue organisations, in disaster control and by the military.

Textil-Know-how für Entwicklung neuer Batterien

V-Trion GmbH entwickelte mit mehreren Millionen Euro an Innovationskapital aus Hongkong eine Salzwasser-Batterie mit Elektroden und Nano-Separatoren, die aus textilen Komponenten bestehen - die unbrennbare und umweltfreundliche Batterie kann es mit Lithium-Ionen-Batterien aufnehmen und zur Gänze in der EU produziert werden.

Miteigentümer Günter Grabher erklärt, dass die Entwicklung auf einer auf einer

15-jährigen Forschungskooperation von
V-Trion GmbH , der Universität Innsbruck und Mitgliedern der Smart-Textiles Plattform Austria basiert. Das Unternehmen erhielt vor zehn Jahren ein weltweites Patent für textile und gestickte Elektroden für Batterieanwendungen.

Nachdem ein Investor aus Hongkong, Herr X.D. Yang, gefunden wurde, gründete er 2022 das Start-up-Unternehmen STOREX Power GmbH in Wien, um die Salzwasser-Batterie weiterzuentwickeln. Weitere

1,5 Millionen Euro wurden investiert, um die Batterie in großem Maßstab zu produzieren.

Nikola Todorovic von der TU Wien, ein Batterieentwicklungsexperte, stieß als geschäftsführender Gesellschafter zu Storex. Die Storex-Batterie wird ab Herbst 2024 in Vorarlberg in industriellen Mengen hergestellt. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine verbesserte Zyklenstabilität im Vergleich zu Lithium-Ionen-Batterien aus und kann vollständig entladen werden, ohne Schaden zu nehmen.

Ein großer Vorteil ist, dass sie nicht brennbar ist, keine giftigen Lösungsmittel oder zusätzliche Elektronik benötigt und keine seltenen Rohstoffe wie Lithium, Nickel oder Kobalt enthält. Da sie aus textilen Komponenten besteht, kann die Batterie vollständig in der EU hergestellt werden.

Ein zweistelliger Millionenbetrag wurde für den zukünftigen Produktionsstandort in Vorarlberg angekündigt, wobei die Grabher Group GmbH Exklusivrechte für die Herstellung der textilen Komponenten hat.

Die Storex-Batterie mit einer Energiekapazität von 2,5 Kilowattstunden ist für die Speicherung erneuerbarer Energien in privaten, gewerblichen und öffentlichen Gebäuden vorgesehen.

We are pleased that world market leaders such as KARL MAYER , adidas , Infineon Technologies have chosen our research facility V-Trion GmbH in Lustenau for their future research location in the field of smarttextiles .

The combination of electrically conductive materials with textiles opens up a wealth of new possibilities, particularly in the field of sport. The joint project of a consortium of manufacturers of components and sporting goods, service providers and research institutions, including the University of Salzburg with its experts in sport, exercise and computer science as a scientific centre, aims to demonstrate how the potential can be exploited through concrete, marketable products.

We are proud to be involved in this collaboration as a partner from the textile production chain. An important milestone was celebrated on 3 May 2023 at the research facility of V-Trion GmbH, a leading manufacturer of high-tech products in Lustenau: We inaugurated the MJ 52/1-S from KARL MAYER, a key machine for project work in the field of smart textiles.
